The Babel of his own righteousness
topples and falls!

(From Octavius Winslow's, "The Man of God")

The first work of grace in a person's heart is that
he is taught by the Spirit to know his own sinfulness.

He is made to know the plague of his heart.

Once a man is brought to see his sinfulness,
he throws down in the dust all his lofty ideas
of human merit and self salvation. The Babel
of his own righteousness topples and falls!

Until you know the sin of your heart, you know
nothing of true Christianity. I am not speaking
merely of sin formally acknowledged, of sin slightly
felt, of sin felt but loved, confessed but cherished;
but of sin mourned over beneath the cross, sin
hated, sin separated from, fastened to the cross,
crucified and slain!
