THE DEPTH OF OUR NEED

To understand the glory of grace, we must first understand the depths of our sin.

The Bible does not describe mankind as spiritually sick, but basically good. Scripture declares that we are sinners by nature and by practice, and hence we are spiritually dead. "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God." Romans 3:10-11

Sin has affected every part of our being. Our minds, affections, desires, wills, and actions have all been corrupted by sin.

Paul describes our natural condition in these solemn words: "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins." Ephesians 2:1

Dead sinners do not need a little assistance.
They need life.

Dead sinners do not need merely better advice.
They need resurrection.

Dead sinners do not need God to make salvation possible and then wait for them to complete the work.
They need God to save them.

GRACE BEGINS WITH GOD

Salvation begins with God, not man.
Before we ever sought Him, He purposed to save His people.
Before we ever loved Him, He loved us.
Before we ever believed, He graciously determined to redeem His own.

Paul wrote: "For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight." Ephesians 1:4

The source of salvation is not human goodness, but divine grace.

God did not look down from Heaven and discover a multitude of people who were seeking Him, worthy of salvation, and ready to believe. Rather, salvation displays the sovereign mercy of God toward those who could never save themselves.

This leaves no room for boasting.

"For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever!" Romans 11:36

GRACE DOES NOT MEAN GOD OVERLOOKS SIN

Grace does not mean that God simply ignores our sin.
God is perfectly holy, righteous, and just.
He cannot simply declare the guilty innocent, without a righteous basis.

The glory of the gospel, is that God's grace does not compromise His justice.

Our salvation was purchased at an infinite cost -- the precious blood of Jesus.

"God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood." Romans 3:25

At the cross, Jesus willingly stood in the place of His people, and bore the judgment their sins deserved.

"He was pierced for our transgressions,
 He was crushed for our iniquities;
 the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him." Isaiah 53:5

Grace is free to the sinner, but it was not cheap.

Our salvation cost Jesus everything.

He bore our guilt.
He endured God's wrath.
He suffered in our place.
He died the death we deserved.

And because He perfectly accomplished the work of redemption, salvation can be freely given to those whom God saves.

GRACE CHANGES THE SINNER

Grace does not merely pardon a sinner, and then leave him as he was.

The same grace that saves, also transforms.

Paul wrote: "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age." Titus 2:11-12

Grace does not give the believer permission to continue in sin.

Grace gives the believer a new desire to live for God.

The Christian does not obey in order to purchase salvation.

He obeys because he has been saved.

Good works are not the root of salvation -- they are its fruit.

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

Grace therefore produces . . .

    holiness,
      gratitude,

GRACE FROM BEGINNING TO END

How wonderful it is to know that the salvation God begins, He will complete.

The believer's confidence does not rest in . . .
  the strength of his own faith,

  or his ability to preserve himself.
It rests in the faithfulness of God.

"Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6

What God begins by grace, He will finish by grace.
What God gives in grace, He will preserve by grace.
What God has promised, He will accomplish.

The redeemed sinner can therefore look toward eternity with confidence -- not because he trusts himself, but because he trusts his gracious Savior.

GRACE ALONE

Beloved, never allow God's glorious grace, to become ordinary to you.

You were not saved, because you deserved salvation.
You were not saved, because you were naturally seeking God.
You were not saved, because you possessed something God needed.
You were saved, because God was gracious to you.

Salvation is from beginning to end, a gift of God's sovereign grace:
Election is by grace.
Effectual Calling is by grace.
Regeneration is by grace.
Faith and Repentance are by grace.
Justification is by grace.
Sanctification is by grace.
Preservation is by grace.
Glorification will be by grace.

When the redeemed finally stand before the throne of God, no one will boast of his own goodness.

No one will sing the praises of his own decision.

No one will celebrate his own merit.

The redeemed will cast their crowns before the throne and cry: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power." Revelation 4:11

And throughout eternity, the redeemed will marvel at the riches of God's grace.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Romans 3:23-24

Sola Gratia -- salvation is by grace alone!

Therefore, let the lost sinner abandon all confidence in himself, and flee to Jesus.

Let the believer abandon all boasting in himself, and glory in God's grace.

And let every redeemed heart rejoice in this everlasting truth:
"By the grace of God I am what I am!" 1 Corinthians 15:10
