Scripture Alone Is the Ultimate Authority

"Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105

There is no greater question in all of Christianity than this: What is our ultimate authority? Upon what foundation are we to:
  build our faith,
  govern our lives,
  discern truth from error,
  and determine what we believe about God, salvation, sin, eternity, and godliness?

The answer is not human wisdom.
It is not church tradition.
It is not the opinions of pastors, theologians, denominations, councils, or religious leaders.
It is not our feelings, experiences, dreams, visions, or impressions.
It is the Word of God.

Sola Scriptura does not mean that the Bible is the only source of information we possess, nor does it mean that Christians cannot learn from history, teachers, pastors, or faithful writings. Rather, it means that the Bible alone is the inspired and infallible Word of God, and therefore Scripture alone is the ultimate and final authority for Christian faith and practice.

God has spoken, and His Word stands above every human authority.

"The Word of our God stands forever." Isaiah 40:8

GOD HAS SPOKEN

The Bible is not merely a collection of religious opinions written by men. It is the Word of God.

"The whole Bible is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

God used human writers, but the ultimate Author is God Himself. The prophets and apostles did not simply record their own religious ideas. They spoke as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, when Scripture speaks, God speaks.

Tradition is not automatically evil. But whenever human tradition contradicts, adds to, subtracts from, or overrules Scripture, then the tradition must bow before the Word of God.

The church is not the master of Scripture.

The Bereans were commended because they did not simply accept Paul's teaching without examination. They "examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Acts 17:11

How much more should every sermon, book, doctrine, worship practice, prophecy, Christian song, and theological claim be tested by the Word of God.

SCRIPTURE IS SUFFICIENT

The Bible does not merely contain some of what we need for godliness. Scripture equips the man of God for every good work. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

God has given us everything necessary for:
  knowing Him,
  understanding salvation,
  recognizing sin,
  walking in holiness,
  and living faithfully before Him.

The problem is not that Scripture is insufficient.
The problem is that we are often insufficiently submissive to Scripture.
We want something more.
We want a new revelation.
We want an extraordinary experience.
We want someone to tell us what God has not said.
We want a message specifically designed for our circumstances.

But Scripture calls us back to the Word that God has already given.

"Do not go beyond what is written." 1 Corinthians 4:6

There is profound safety in remaining within the boundaries of God's revealed Word.

SCRIPTURE MAKES US WISE UNTO SALVATION

Most importantly, Scripture is God's appointed instrument for bringing sinners to the knowledge of salvation. Paul reminded Timothy: "The Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 3:15

We do not need another gospel.

We do not need a new revelation concerning salvation.

We do not need human philosophy to improve God's message.

The sinner needs to hear the Word of God concerning
  his sin,
  God's holiness,
  the judgment he deserves,
  and the salvation that is found in Jesus alone.

"Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ." Romans 10:17

God saves sinners through the gospel. And that gospel is revealed to us in the Scriptures.

Therefore, if we want to know the truth about salvation, we must return to the Bible.

LET THE SCRIPTURES HAVE THE FINAL WORD

Sola Scriptura is not merely a theological slogan. It is a call to submission.

It means that when Scripture contradicts our opinions, then our opinions must fall.
When Scripture contradicts our traditions, then our traditions must fall.
When Scripture contradicts our desires, then our desires must fall.
When Scripture contradicts our culture, then our culture must fall.
When Scripture contradicts our religious preferences, then our preferences must fall.

The Scriptures must always have the final word.

Jesus said, "Your Word is truth; Your Word is truth." John 17:17

Notice that He did not say that God's Word merely contains truth.

It is truth. And because it is truth, we can safely build our lives upon it.

The world changes.
Opinions change.
Churches change.
Traditions change.
Cultures change.
But "the Word of the Lord stands forever." 1 Peter 1:25

Beloved, let us therefore return again and again to the Scriptures. Let us:
  read them humbly,
  believe them completely,
  obey them faithfully,
  and treasure them deeply.

Let us never place the authority of man, above the authority of God.

Let us never allow human tradition, to silence divine revelation.

Let us never be ashamed to say with conviction:
Sola Scriptura -- Scripture alone is our ultimate authority.

For when we bow before the Word of God, we are ultimately bowing before the God who gave it.

And when Scripture speaks, may our hearts always respond:
"Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening." 1 Samuel 3:9
