A discontented heart!

There are many things in this world which a discontented heart will pant after, or murmur over. But the indulging of such a disposition, is rebellion against the Sovereign Disposer of all events. Yes, it is an utter contempt of our all-wise, all-gracious and all-merciful, Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer.

What! Is it not sufficient to have:
  God for our Father,
  Christ for our Savior,
  the Spirit for our Comforter, and
  Heaven for our everlasting inheritance?

Must we murmur and complain because all temporal circumstances are not exactly as we would like to have them?

What does any temporal need or loss signify, when we have such unsearchable riches secured to us? In comparison with such spiritual blessings, the greatest of earthly comforts is no more than the dust upon the balance!

But alas! we are too apt to forget this! We are ready, like the Israelites, to overlook all the mercies we enjoy, through an excessive regret of something lost, or an inordinate desire of something unpossessed.

"I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." Philippians 4:11-12
