Well, my proud friend, I do not wonder that you despise the
gospel, for the gospel just tells you that you are entirely lost.

It tells you that your very righteousness is full of sin.
That, as for any hope of your being saved by it,
you might as well try to sail across the Atlantic on a
sere leaf, as try to get to heaven by your righteousness.

And as for it being a garment fit to cover you,
you might as well get a spider's web to dress in.

Ah! my hearer, I know why you despise Christ-
it is because of your Satanic pride!

May the Lord pull the pride out of you;
for if he does not, your pride will be the faggot
that shall roast your soul forever!
