In every thorn and thistle

In every thorn and thistle we may read the fall of man.

Had man never sinned, he would never have suffered. No thorns or thistles would have sprung up beneath his feet.

Now, they cover the earth, as perpetual emblems of man's misery, and of God's displeasure.
