Disturbing the hornet's nest
(Krummacher, "The Suffering Savior")
The world feels that the teachings of Christ . . .
destroy their false peace,
condemn their carnality, and
demand the sacrifice of their idols.
Hence they are averse to, and incensed against Him.
The Christian religion disturbs the hornet's nest, tears away the plasters and coverings from secret wounds, and awakens conscience, which had been rendered lethargic by a variety of magic potions.
Hence their hatred and animosity to it.
